The Daniel L. Malone Engineering Center, which houses laboratories for biomedical engineering, makes the most of a wedge-shaped site next to the Farmington Canal railroad right-of-way (which is gradually becoming a linear park through New Haven and neighboring towns). Because the laboratories do not require natural light, architects Pelli Clarke Pelli placed the extra-wide corridors and stairs along a sweeping glass wall that looks out over the canal trail and Hillhouse Avenue. Such inviting circulation space is thought to encourage researchers to talk to each other.
