On August 12, 1805, Lewis stood at Lemhi Pass on the Montana-Idaho border and beheld “immence ranges of high mountains still to the West of us with their tops partially covered with snow.” The sight ended the prevailing notion that the Rockies were an easily crossed chain of single peaks stretching from Canada to Mexico.
