Sheffield House, 1832–1957
New Haven architect Ithiel Town built this house for himself in the Greek Revival style in 1836. Twenty-three years later, Henry Austin reinterpreted it as an Italian villa for railroad magnate Joseph Sheffield, who later gave it to the Scientific School that bore his name. It served as a laboratory until 1957, when it was torn down to make way for a utilitarian addition to Dunham Laboratory.
