Henry Luce '20 (1898-1967). With classmate Briton Hadden, Luce founded Time magazine in 1923. After Hadden’s death Luce went on to found Fortune in 1930, The March of Time in 1935, Life in 1936, and Sports Illustrated in 1954. Luce changed the world of journalism by helping to create the newsmagazine, developing a popular business magazine, producing the best news film of its period, revolutionizing photojournalism, and promoting a wider interest in all forms of sports. A staunch Republican, a defender of big business, an opponent of big labor, and an aggressive anticommunist, Luce said that the twentieth century should be “the American century.” He was not afraid to take sides. “We tell the truth as we see it,” he said. Luce was commemorated in 1998 on a 32-cent stamp.
