Cole Porter '13, '60LHDHon (1891-1964). Porter was a master of music
and lyrics, and his songs remain classics. At Yale he wrote several musical
comedies and 300 songs, including the football classics “Bull-dog” and “Bingo,
That’s the Lingo,” and the humorous Yale songbook selections “Crew Song” and “Antoinette
Birby.” He made a half-hearted attempt to get through Harvard Law School, but
dropped out and moved to New York to start his Broadway career.
Among his best-known musicals are Can Can; Anything Goes; Kiss Me, Kate; Silk
Stockings; and Gay Divorce, which includes his most famous song, “Night and
Day” (it was such a hit that the musical instantly became known as “that 'Night
and Day' show”). Porter, whose homosexuality was an open secret in his social
circle, is one of a handful of Americans on U.S. stamps who are known to be
gay. The 1991 stamp marked the 100th anniversary of his birth.
