Maya Lin '81, ’86MArch, '87DFAHon (1959-). Lin entered the design
competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, for an
assignment in a college class. She has written that one of her inspirations was
the Woolsey Hall rotunda, where the lists of war dead gave her “a lasting
impression … of the power of a name.” She went on to design the Civil
Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, and many other works. Lin currently
serves on the Corporation, Yale’s governing body. The stamp above was issued in
1984.
