Maya Lin '81, ’86MArch, '87DFAHon (1959-). Lin entered the design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, for an assignment in a college class. She has written that one of her inspirations was the Woolsey Hall rotunda, where the lists of war dead gave her “a lasting impression … of the power of a name.” She went on to design the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, and many other works. Lin currently serves on the Corporation, Yale’s governing body. The stamp above was issued in 1984.
