Yale chemists John Gamble Kirkwood (1907-1959) and Lars Onsager '35PhD (1903-1976) were both friends and rivals in their lifetimes, but Onsager’s family got the last laugh when Onsager was buried next to his colleague in the Yale lot. Kirkwood’s stone had been inscribed with a laundry list of honors; Onsager’s family opted for a simple “Nobel Laureate, etc.”
