People even wanted to preserve what the composers had to say. In 1927, when Sir Edward Elgar was conducting his  second symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra, someone had the idea of surreptitiously recording him in rehearsal with the musicians, creating what may be the world’s first rehearsal recording. Unfortunately, Sir Edward had his back to the microphone.
