One must squeeze through a narrow enclosed stone stairwell—then brave a seemingly endless open spiral stair—to reach Harkness Tower’s four enormous clock faces and their electric mechanisms, which are in a space dominated by the enormous bells of the tower’s carillon. Crump and Dudley make sure not to visit when the carilloneurs are practicing their art.
