Building Boom New Haven’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum, an exemplar of the architectural movement known as brutalism, met a brutal end on January 20. At 7:49 a.m., as thousands of people watched from nearby streets and buildings, a ton of explosives attached to the building’s massive piers brought down its rooftop parking garage. (The arena itself already had been demolished by more conventional means.) Built in 1972, the coliseum hosted hundreds of concerts and athletic events—including a few Yale hockey and basketball games. But it became a less viable venue over the years and closed in 2002. City officials hope to replace it with stores, housing, and a new home for the Long Wharf Theater. |
