From Soccer to Sailing, Yalies at the Olympics At least nine Yale students and alumni, representing four different nations and territories, were scheduled to compete in the Olympic games in August in Athens. (This magazine went to press before the games began.) They are: Eleni Benson, a Yale senior on Greece’s first women’s Olympic soccer team (her mother is a native of Greece); George Gleason ’01, swimming for the second time on the U.S. Virgin Islands team; Sada Jacobson, a Yale junior competing for the U.S. fencing team in women’s saber, a new Olympic event this year; Isabelle Kinsolving '02, a former Yale sailor and ice hockey player on the U.S. sailing team; Patricia Miranda, an incoming Yale law student who deferred admission in order to compete on the U.S. women’s wrestling team; Kate O'Neill '03, a record-breaking Yale distance runner competing in the 10,000 meters for the U.S.; Celita Schutz '90, a former soccer and basketball player at Yale making her third Olympic appearance on the U.S. judo team; Matt Taylor '92, an Atlanta teacher competing for the U.S. as a slalom canoeist for the second time; Josh West '98, a former Yale crew member rowing in the eight-man boat for his native Britain. |
Sports Shorts The football team kicks off its 132nd season on September 18 at Dayton University in Ohio. In a preseason poll, Ivy League sportswriters picked the Bulldogs to finish third in the conference, behind Penn and Harvard. The men’s hockey team this winter will include a pair of freshmen with a future: Will Engasser and Rob Page, teammates from the Blake School in Minnesota, were both selected in the National Hockey League draft in July. Kevin Laseau has been named assistant to Yale volleyball coach Erin Appleman. Laseau comes to Yale from Muncie, Indiana, where he has been an assistant coach at the Municiana Volleyball Club, a well-known proving ground for college players and coaches. Women’s tennis coach Chad Skorupka was named Coach of the Year for the Eastern region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Skorupka, who is beginning his fourth season at Yale, led the team to a second-place Ivy finish last year. Soccer player Andrew Dealy '05 was one of only two Ivy Leaguers named to College Soccer News’s preseason All-America team. Dealy, who plays forward and midfield, led the league in assists last season. Yale Field has resumed its summer job as a minor-league ball park, but with a new home team: the New Haven County Cutters, a Class A baseball team in the independent Northeast League. Also new to the ball park this season are air-conditioned “luxury suites.” |
