17th-century French ivory dolls used in teaching anatomy. Each is smaller than a Barbie. Their chests and abdomens open to reveal internal organs; the woman’s enlarged uterus opens to reveal a tiny fetus, head downward, its limbs flexed. The dolls’ heads lie on lace-hemmed cloth pillows.
