The Yale Medal Recognizes Outstanding Contributions of Service to Yale
February 2002
by Grace
Profatilov, Assistant Director for Communications
The Yale Medal is the highest award presented by the Association of Yale Alumni, conferred solely to honor outstanding individual service to the University. This year’s recipients reflect the range of service and leadership the AYA strives to recognize with this award. We honor these individuals for their remarkable contributions, and we recognize that they do honor to Yale and to all of us in the alumni community by the ways in which they have chosen to render service back to our treasured community of scholars and friends.
Malcolm K. Brachman '46
In his many years of distinguished service, Malcolm Brachman has served in a myriad of roles including member of the Yale University Council and Committee for the Division of the Physical Sciences, Southwest regional chair of the Campaign for Yale, president of the Yale Club of Dallas, chair of the Advisory Committee of Yale’s Economic Growth Center, and associate fellow of Timothy Dwight College. His wise counsel and generous support have greatly strengthened international activities at Yale, the study of economic demography, and architecture.
Walter H. Brown '45W
Walter Brown’s record of service to Yale has extended across virtually every type of volunteer engagement possible. He has taken on the roles of president and director of the Yale Club of Central New Jersey, vice chairman of the Alumni Board (the predecessor organization of the AYA), treasurer of the 1945w Class Council, class reunion gift chair, and member of the Yale Development Board. In all these roles, he has consistently instilled in others his own devotion and dedication to Yale, while forging a war-torn class into one of Yale’s most cohesive and loyal cohorts of alumni.
Richard Gilder '54
As a member of the 1954 Class Council, Richard Gilder conceived the unique “Yale 54/50 Fund,” which has resulted in a gift to Yale of more than $70 million, credited to the Class’s 50th reunion in 2004. By virtue of his remarkable creativity and leadership, Yale is now in a position to construct two state-of-the-art engineering and science facilities. This latest accomplishment only crowns a visionary record that includes his roles in establishing two very distinct centers of excellence at Yale, the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition, and Yale’s new rowing facility, the Gilder Boathouse.
J. Robert Mann Jr. '51E
J. Robert Mann Jr. has dedicated himself wholeheartedly to alumni activities at Yale since his graduation. His many years of service include membership on the Yale Alumni Board, the Federation of Yale Alumni Organizations, and the AYA Board of Governors, as well as his roles as president of the Yale Science and Engineering Association and member of the Class of 1951 Executive Committee. A tireless advocate for advancing the quality and visibility of engineering studies in Yale College, he has worked with the engineering department to develop new courses, research opportunities, and outstanding new laboratory facilities for undergraduates in the areas of systems design and microelectronics.
Ian Mininberg '34MusB
Ian Mininberg’s distinguished service to Yale spans 60 years, including serving as the chairman of alumni affairs for the Yale School of Music for 20 years. Through his personal efforts and leadership he has significantly strengthened the bond between the School of Music and its alumni over the years. His extraordinary loyalty, dedication, and vision have provided the School of Music with invaluable support and have invigorated alumni ties. Every music alumni gathering, communication, or effort for the past 60 years bears the stamp of Ian Mininberg’s tireless work and planning.
Selection of Medalists
The AYA seeks nominations for the Yale Medal from all quarters and strives to honor those who have rendered exemplary volunteer service to Yale, no matter what their area of service. As in previous years, we invite all alumni to bring to our attention, at the address below, those who have outstanding records as volunteers for Yale. From these nominations, the AYA Board of Governors chooses Medalists on the recommendation of a committee chaired by a member of the Board.
The Yale Medal Dinner
On Friday, April 26, the 2002 Yale Medalists will be honored at a dinner during Assembly LX. The Yale Medal Dinner is a festive opportunity to honor both present and past recipients of Yale’s highest award for service; many past recipients make attending the dinner a priority. Delegates and others who wish to honor these exceptional supporters of Yale by attending the Yale Medal Dinner may purchase tickets for $35 per person by writing to Susan Cohn at Rose Alumni House. |
